Product Care

General Product Care

  • Remove all packaging before use.

  • Place your candles on a protected, heat resistant surface, or use an appropriate holder or tray to protect your furniture.

  • For all wicked products, keep the wick trimmed to a length of about 3mm - this optimises burn performance and helps prevent ‘tunnelling’.

  • All Yankee Candle products should be used indoors and away from drafts to improve fragrance strength and maximise lifespan.

  • To prevent your candle from smoking, ensure the wick is kept trimmed and keep the wax pool clear of wick trimmings, matches, and any other combustible material.

  • Candles are sensitive to both light and temperature, so if you are storing your candles for an extended period of time, keep them in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight or fluorescent light.

  • And, of course, always follow standard candle safety advice - keep lit candles well out of reach of children and pets and away from any flammable materials, and never leave a lit candle unattended!

Jars, Pillars & Tumblers

  • With all Jars, Pillars and Tumblers, it is important to prevent ‘tunnelling’. Tunnelling (also known as a ‘memory ring’) occurs when the candle flame burns a tunnel down the middle of the candle, leaving wax round the sides of the candle and causing wastage. There are two main ways to prevent this:

    • Burn Time: Ensure you keep your Jar, Pillar and Tumbler candles lit for long enough to allow the wax to completely melt across the full diameter of the candle. If the wax is not allowed to melt from edge to edge of the jar, it will create a "memory ring," especially if this is the first time the candle is lit. Once a candle has this "memory ring," it will continue to tunnel and to burn that way for the life of the candle. As an approximate guide, each candle should burn one hour for every inch in diameter. Therefore, a Large Housewarmer Jar should burn for a minimum of four hours to liquefy the entire top layer of wax. This will extend the life of your candle and ensure you get the most for your money.

    • Wick Length: You should keep the wick trimmed to about 3mm at all times (extinguish the wick first before trimming). This keeps the flame close to the wax and helps prevent a memory ring from forming. For this, we would recommend using a pair of Wick Trimmers rather than a pair of scissors - their special design allows you to easily reach inside the candle even when it has burnt right down, and their cupped blades collect the wick trimmings and prevent them from falling into the wax pool, which can cause smoking and a fire hazard.

  • Jars, Pillars and Tumblers will become hot during use. To prevent the glass from cracking and to help protect surfaces, be sure to extinguish the flame and discontinue use once the candle burns down to the last 1.5cm of wax.

  • To protect surfaces and add some extra style to your candles, consider using one of Yankee Candle’s many appropriate accessories. Trays, Holders and Stands are ideal for this, and come in a variety of sizes and styles to fit each candle type.

  • We would recommend using an Illuma-Lid or Shade for your Housewarmer Jar candles, as these will reduce the effects of draughts and keep the flame burning steadily. This increases burn time and helps reduce tunnelling.

  • All glass candles are fragile and will become hot during use. Allow them to cool before touching and handle with care when moving.

  • Never attempt to pick up a candle by the lid or any accessories.

  • Extinguish the candle before replacing the lid.
Hot Tip: Your nose can become used to a smell and stop you from noticing the candle aroma after it has been burning for a while. A quick whiff of ground coffee or roasted coffee beans helps ‘reset’ your sense of smell and allows you to enjoy your favourite fragrance once more!

Tea Lights

  • All Yankee Candle Tea Lights are self-containing, (which means the melted wax will be contained in their plastic base), but we would always recommend the use of a Tea Light Holder for greater safety and to protect furniture (they also make great little ornaments!)

  • We would recommend the use of Yankee’s Unscented Tea Lights for use with your Wax Melts and Melt Warmers. Their long burn time, consistently high heat and smoke-free flame ensure you get the best from your Wax Melts.
Hot Tip: Multiple Tea Lights placed around a room help distribute the fragrance evenly, as well as create a lovely candle-lit atmosphere!

Wax Melts & Melt Warmers

  • Remove all packaging before use.

  • Wax Melts should always be burned in an appropriate Melt Warmer. These can be either electric (which run off UK mains electricity) or non-electric (which use unscented tea-lights in their base).

  • Despite their small size, Wax Melts provide powerful fragrancing, so we would recommend using them in medium to large sized rooms, particularly in some of the stronger scents.

  • By using multiple Melt Warmers in a single room, Wax Melts can be ‘layered’ to combine multiple fragrances together and create a whole new aroma unique to you and your home. We recommend combining fragrances from the same Fragrance Family for optimal effects, but feel free to experiment!

  • If you want to change scents, extinguish the tea light/turn off the warmer, and allow the Wax Melt to cool and solidify before removing from the Warmer.

  • Always allow a Melt Warmer to cool before attempting to move. Some of the Warmers, like the Petal Bowl range, have separate bases and cups, so make sure you have a firm hold of both when picking them up.

  • In non-electric Melt Warmers, we recommend the use of Yankee Candle’s Unscented Tea Lights. Their long burn time, consistently high heat and smoke-free flame ensure you get the best from your Wax Melts.

  • Store partially-used Wax Melts in a cool, dry place out of direct light. Keeping your partially-used Wax Melts in a sealed container or wrapping them in some clingfilm can help to preserve the scent.
Hot Tip: Wax Melts can be a little tricky to remove. To make it easier, allow the warmer to cool thoroughly and place in a fridge/freezer for 10 minutes - you will find the wax will pop out more easily. Allow the Melt Warmer to return to room temperature before using it again.

Votives & Votive Holders

  • Remove all packaging before use.
  • Yankee Candle’s Votive Samplers are not free-standing, which means the use of an appropriate Votive Holder is essential if you don’t want a sticky pool of wax all over your furniture!
  • Their small size makes them perfect for sampling new fragrances, and they can be ‘layered’ to combine multiple fragrances together and create a whole new aroma unique to you and your home. We recommend combining fragrances from the same Fragrance Family for optimal effects, but feel free to experiment!
  • Extinguish the flame and allow Votive Holders to cool before attempting to move.
  • Store partially-used Votives in a cool, dry place out of direct light. Keeping your partially-used Votives in a sealed container or wrapping them in some clingfilm can help to preserve the scent.
Hot Tip: How closely a Votive Holder fits the Votive inside can affect burn performance. The closer the fit, the better the burn, so be sure to bear this in mind when choosing a holder!

Scent Plugs & Refills

  • Yankee Candle Scent Plugs and Scent Plug Refills are designed to complement each other. Never attempt to use either product with any other plug-in warmer or scented refill.
  • Scent Plugs have a small adjuster which gives you control over the level of fragrance. Experiment and see what level is perfect for your room size, but be aware the level you select will affect how long the refill lasts for. Each refill lasts for up to 4 weeks.
  • Our Scent Plugs are for use with UK (230-240v) wall mains outlets, and should only be used as such.
Hot Tip: Scent Plugs are a great flameless option for houses where naked flames are not suitable - if you have children or pets, for example. As such we would recommend placing them in sockets which are out of reach of inquisitive fingers or clumsy paws!

Reed Diffusers

  • Remove all packaging before use.

  • The reeds will take a few hours to absorb the scented oil, so don’t be surprised if they take a while to reach full strength.

  • Reed Diffusers provide gentle but continuous fragrance, and are suitable for use in small to medium size rooms.

  • Keep your Diffuser out of drafts to extend their lifespan. Each diffuser lasts up to 8 weeks.

  • The level of fragrance can be adjusted by changing the number of reeds you place in the fragrance oil. The more reeds you use, the stronger the scent, the fewer reeds used, the longer it will last.

  • Reed Diffusers are a safer alternative to naked flames, however, they should still be placed out of the reach of children and pets.
Hot Tip: For an extra burst of fragrance, try reversing the reeds and placing the opposite ends in the oil. This will also help diffuse the fragrance faster when using them for the first time.

Travel Products

  • Car Jars and Car Jar Ultimates can obviously be used in your vehicles, but they also work well in other small spaces - wardrobes, for example.

  • We would recommend hanging them where they won’t distract you when driving - the rear-view mirror may not be the best option.

  • Vent Sticks allow you to control the level of fragrance by adjusting the air flow through the air vents.
Hot Tip: Car Jar Ultimates and Vent Sticks use odour-neutralising technology so they’re great if you have pets, as they help to eliminate, rather than just mask, any unwanted smells.

Accessories

  • Each accessory is designed to fit a specific selection of candles - for example, a Large Shade & Tray set will fit both Large and Medium Housewarmer Jars, whereas a Small Shade & Tray Set is for Small Jars only. Check each individual product page to see what candles each accessory is suitable for.

  • Some accessories are made from fragile materials like glass or ceramics, so they should be handled with care, and always allowed to cool first.

  • Keeping the wick trimmed on your candles helps to stop your accessories getting dirty from candle smoke. If they do become dirty, simply wipe them with a damp piece of kitchen towel to remove sooty marks.
Hot Tip: When choosing an accessory range, keep in mind that certain designs will work best with certain wax colours as well as specific décors.
